Super Saturday

Saturday was a super full day that started leaving our house at 7 AM for Lilli’s Destination Imagination Super Saturday tournament. Before seeing it, all I really knew about DI was that Lillian had been researching presidents that are on coins and what I’ve heard from her teachers which is almost exactly what the website says:
“DI is an educational program where student teams solve open ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments... In working to solve challenges, teams learn important life skills like time management, collaboration, conflict management, and creative and critical thinking.”

That’s pretty vague but this is what I saw... The first challenge was they had stacks of boxes they had to stack to match pictures that the stackers couldn’t see. They had to come up with a way to communicate with each other using no words or gestures with only a few items such as paper cups, pipe cleaners and rubber bands so that the spotters could get the builders to build the correct structure. All the challenges were similar problem solving things. They had to build a bridge using nothing but similar materials. They had to roll a ball into a square using Domino’s but their bodies couldn’t cross the line to get close to it. They had to make tools out of normal household items and work together as a team. The judges were highly complementary of her team and they did the best on some of the challenges out of all the groups. Today was not officially judged. It was a practice round to get ready for the state tournament coming up at the end of February. The nice thing was the judges were able to give feedback and parents could watch. We will not be able to see anything they do at the next round so it was pretty cool because without this I would never have even known what she was doing. That whole thing lasted about four hours and then we went to lunch with the team after.

From there we brought one of her friends home with us and picked up two more to go to see a movie and then come back for a play date for her “birthday party”.

This was the way to do it. She got more one on one time with the friends she cares the most about hanging out with. Plus more hours total with them. And I spent about a quarter of what I normally do for a birthday. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to go back to a big class party after this. And I honestly don’t know that they would want to.

We saw “A Dogs Way Home” and then came back to our house and played for hours. There were presents and games plus pizza and cake for dinner. (I don’t know why they were chanting at her to smash her face in the last little bit of this cake but it was going in the trash anyway so I allowed it. They thought it was the funniest thing they had ever seen!) It was a LONG day that didn’t stop from 7 AM to 7 PM but everyone had fun! So glad to celebrate her birthday again!

While we were having a girls day, you know Matt was eating up his. It’s the last Saturday of hunting season so I’m sure he stayed in the blind for pretty much all of it.

They had one of the best hunts of the season today so that made him a happy man!! A great Saturday all around.
