The “Mathis Side of the Family” Visit

When I was growing up we had friends that we considered family that we called “the Beck side of the family.” The grandparents were Nana and Papa’s closest friends and their kids all grew up with my Mom and aunts and uncle like cousins. That’s the way we feel about Shanon and Alex. He is Matt’s closest friend and they have become my family too over the years and our kids call the boys their cousins. So almost 2 years was WAY too long to go without seeing them. Covid really messed us up and this was the first time we’d gotten to meet Lucas. He was born on March 16, 2020, at the VERY start of the pandemic. We had plans to go meet him about 10 days later but decided we would give it “a few weeks to let Covid calm down” 🙄 before we went. Well, they took quarantine as seriously as we did, so here we are 16 months later finally getting to see him.

He was shy, but so cute, and we loved getting to talk to him even if he didn’t want any of us but Katie to hold him. ❤️ We plan to see him enough over the next few months to where he’ll get to know us. Logan was so shy the last time we saw him, but now he’s a whole different kid. I was amazed how talkative he is, and he’s so polite it’s like talking to a tiny adult. He loved “his room” (the bonus room) and slept all night on the “high bed” (top bunk) both nights.

We ate huge meals, swam, and hung out for the weekend and it was so good to catch up! (We also had a birthday brunch for Matt with Capn, Yaya, Cara, Luke and Josie but I’ll post those pics on his birthday.) We picked up right where we left off just like we’d seen each other a week ago and those are the best kinds of friends. We’ll see them again in a few weeks and our goal is to get sick of each this year. 😉

They left this morning and it’s kind of weird to have a quiet house. Austin and Josey were here all last week (except one night with Yaya and Capn) while Rachel was getting her Mom ready to move. We didn’t do too much, but the kids always love being together. We mostly stayed home except one movie and they came with us to get our haircuts and Lilli’s first eyebrow wax.

(Katie and Josey built this bookshelf with very little help from me. They were so proud!)

They were all very sad when they had to leave on Friday, but I know they are glad to be home now. Plus I’m sure they will be FaceTiming each other constantly from here on out, LOL. They were in town all but 4 days of 3 weeks and that was after being here for a week of sailing camp right before. I was looking at the calendar and there were only 11 days we didn’t have overnight company here in almost 5 weeks (13 were A and J but 2 were Britney and Bella while Heather started chemo and 6 were Anna and Piper), plus 4 of those days, the girls were spending the night out. So that’s only 7 out of 34 days they weren’t having a sleepover and that doesn’t even count the beach trip. Talk about an amazing summer for these girls!  We all truly loved having them, but you’d know I was lying if I said it wasn’t also tiring. 😉 So while the kids are at aquarium camp this week, there will be lots of rest so that we are ready to go to Baton Rouge the week after. We have to see that part of the family too before school starts and it’s crazy it’s less than 4 weeks away!
