Happy New Year

Happy New Year! 2020 has FINALLY come and gone. And while I don’t expect things to change overnight, I am hoping that 2021 can be the start of getting back to normal. Lilli said last night that it was weird to not be with Uncle Shanny and Aunt Alex and I have to agree. They weren’t here last year either because Alex was pregnant so it has been WAY too long since we’ve seen them. We are hoping a visit can come very soon and we can meet Lucas and get to spend some time with Logan (and their parents 😉). So for the first time since 2009, when I was 3 weeks from my due date with Lil, we stayed home and had no plans. (Even though Shanon an Alex didn’t come last year, Ryan came with the girls.) It was a quiet night with movies, fireworks in the rain and attempting to stay up until midnight. Katie made it until 10:00 and me, Matt and Lillian made it but were immediately in bed after.

We made deer bombs, cabbage from the garden, black eyed peas, and cornbread early this morning so that Matt could leave for the camp. There was no way we were risking not having luck!

Not that 2020 was all bad. I looked through my year of pictures today and had lots of smiles over the memories. For one thing, we added 3 animals to the family.

Of course January and February were full of friends and family visits before the world came to a halt.

Then on March 13th the craziness started. I’ll never forget that day. Coronavirus was in the news a little bit but that was the day the Governor officially canceled school and we decided we needed to stay in. Of course we already had the accepted offer on our new house and were days away from listing ours so that added to the craziness. But the blessing in disguise was that we got to live for 5 weeks at the cabin and we all really loved our time there. It was so nice to not have to worry about strangers in the house for showings and we were fortunate to have that option.

By May, we had closed and were moving in and we finally had the space we’d been wanting. Everything from our old house PLUS our 2 storage buildings fit and we had a yard big enough for Matt’s garden and the pool I had always wanted.

This made quarantine a whole lot better than it would have been had we not moved! We stayed in without even going inside a grocery store for the next 5 months so the space was such a blessing. We managed to see friends for “car picnics” and would get together with family for outside visits

But that was about it for our in-person socialization. We managed to stay busy in the pool, garden, doing projects around the house, Katie learned to ride a bike and we stayed in touch with family virtually. We laughed at how the cousins voices became apart of everyday life.
When Matt finally hit that year out of the hospital anniversary and his pulmonologist said his lungs should be healed, we loosened our restrictions a little. We still kept visits to outside but that started to include friends and even had a few play dates.

Katie loves homeschooling and Lilli tolerates it. 😉 But I think she’d admit it can be fun at times. And I love the time with them. I know they will go back one day and I will cry like it’s the first day of kindergarten, but this is definitely the most consecutive time I will ever have with them and I try to not forget that.

There were 1st duck hunts and time at the camp hunting and playing with Dad

I managed to come very close to hitting my work goals even without working for 6 months of the year. I know that means 2021 will be even better!
My immediate family made the effort to drive up here and stay at a hotel so they could see us and visit outside, and we had several other visits with family that we really appreciated because I know it was out of the way for them.

So all in all, I can’t even say it was too terrible. Lilli said today it was the worst year ever and I’m sure in her kid time it seems like it. But we got through with no sickness or hospital stays. Everyone still got some time together and lots of good things still happened. So while I am (along with the rest of the world) ready to say goodbye to 2020 and have even more time with friends and family eventually, I’m going to choose to remember the good. ❤️
