San Pedro, Belize- Days 1-3
We woke up Sunday morning at 5:00 to start our day of travel to Belize. We were leaving our hotel by 6:00 to drive from Austin to Dallas to catch our 12:30 flight to Belize City. I laughed when I was telling people that Matt was in heaven. You see, I had gotten a cold the week before and slowly lost my voice during our weekend in Austin. On Friday it was just kind of hoarse but by Sunday, I literally could not speak. Matt was in heaven because he was heading to spend 5 days on the beach in Belize with a wife that couldn't speak. He said it jokingly (I think, haha) on Saturday and I didn't let him live it down. We made the drive with no issues and got checked in and through security with just enough time to have some breakfast and a bloody mary before the flight. The flight was uneventful as well and we landed at 3:30, It took about 20 minutes to get through customs and to a taxi to catch the 4:30 water taxi to San Pedro.
That was an hour and a half ride so we finally made it to San Pedro at 6:00. I had found the hotel we stayed in based on tripadvisor.com reviews but you're never 100% sure what you're going to get until you see it for yourself. We were pleasantly surprised by our quaint little hotel. It was nothing fancy but we were on the first floor and stepped directly off of our patio on to the sand. We had a small living room with a TV (that we never once turned on) and a kitchen with a small table. There was a separate bedroom and bathroom too.
That night we walked in to town and had an excellent dinner of lobster burrito for Matt and lobster fajita for me. A lot was closed because it was Sunday and I wasn't feeling that great so we went back to the hotel where I went to bed and Matt sat on the patio people watching.
We decided to take it easy the first couple of days to let me get better so we spent pretty much all of Monday and Tuesday laying on the beach and reading our books. I must say it wasn't fun to not feel good on vacation but I can't think of a better place to recover. We did walk in to town for breakfast Monday morning and it was excellent.
I've never taken so many pictures of food as I did on this trip. Either because of how good it was, how cheap it was, or both! This was a more touristy place so not the cheapest but such a good meal. Not exactly sure what it was but we both liked it. And we were introduced to fry jacks. Pretty much a sopapilla without the cinnamon and sugar. It was on almost every breakfast menu I saw so I'm assuming a popular local breakfast food.
After breakfast we went back to the hotel and read our books until mid afternoon. You can pretty much walk everywhere in town but to get around easier and see more of the island, most people rent a golf cart. As soon as it was dropped off we decided to check out the island a little.
We drove over the bridge to the North end but only made it about a mile. That was the bumpiest road we'd ever seen and not much fun in a golf cart. We did pick up a hitchhiker on the way back. A lot of the locals catch rides with each other so when a woman getting off work at one of the big resorts asked for a ride to town, we told her to hop on. In exchange she pointed out some of the restaurants that are popular and most importantly where to find the papusas! I've been hearing about these for almost 3 years since the rest of the family got to go back in 2010 and I was excited to see them for myself. Matt quickly realized that driving a golf cart on San Pedro is not like driving on a golf course. Pretty sure it was a little nerve racking at first but he got us there!
We went back to the hotel for the afternoon to do more reading in our beach chairs. My the time we got hungry again, we were craving papusas again so we hopped back on the golf cart. We did drive around and explore the neighborhoods a little before we went to the restaurant. By the time we left we pretty much knew where we were anywhere on the South end of the island from all the exploring we did. Didn't get any pictures but these neighborhoods looked like somewhere you wouldn't go at night in the U.S.A. As we drove through we got nothing but smiles and waves from these happy people. Crazy when you look at how little they have an how happy they are anyway. Really makes you think....
There was another restaurant across the street from the one where we ate lunch that sold papusas too (only places in town as far as we know) so we decided to check them out to see which one we like better. We found our favorite restaurant!
And I finally see why Matt has wanted me to learn how to make homemade flour tortilllas for years. We've been home for 6 hours and I've already googled it and plan to attempt it for our anniversary on Monday. I still wasn't feeling 100% that day so we once again went back to the hotel for me to go to bed.
If it's possible, Tuesday was even lazier than Monday. We found our breakfast that we ate the rest of the week 2 doors down from our hotel. It was a little hut where 2 women made fresh tortillas and fry jacks for tacos and chalupas for breakfast. We could get 9 tacos for Matt, 2 chalupas for me and a drink for $4 US. That's my kind of meal! Delicious too. Found it funny to eat this for breakfast but it's what the locals do so "when in Rome...."
We did not move from our chairs until it was time to go to dinner that night. I had a necklace on that left a tan line. Kinda sad but pretty funny too!
When Matt was staying on Blew Bayou 2 years ago they were anchored right off a resort called Ramon's. They have a restaurant so we decided to eat there on Tuesday so that I could check it out. It is a beautiful place with a jungle feel and thatched roof rooms. Ramon owns most of the town. His name is everywhere! My Dad went diving with him 30 years ago and all he had was one boat. Guess he's done well. Matt originally wanted to stay there but, for the price, we figured we never really spend much time in our rooms anyway. One day... The meal was good but the atmosphere is really the best thing about it.
It was a really nice date night and I was starting to feel better so nice to hang out a little more in the evening. We didn't stay up too late though because we booked a snorkeling/spearfishing trip for the next morning we wanted to be rested for. More on that tomorrow.
