First Week of Summer

Image
We sure have enjoyed our first week of no alarms and no real plans. The flower beds and gardens are showing signs of summer. I’ve managed to keep my hydrangeas alive And the blackberries are starting to ripen And we’ve enjoyed the fruits of Matt’s (and Capn’s) garden. We found out a couple of weeks ago that Landry’s Dad got a job in Ft. Worth so they will be moving soon. Her Mom and I have been busy getting the house ready to list while she and Kathleen have tried to get in as much time together as we will allow.  They are the sweetest little besties and they are really going to miss each other. They try to have play dates as often as possible, see each other at church and even play soccer together. They had their last game last weekend And Landry’s parents hosted a pool party for the team after. Kathleen says now that Landry won’t be here to play with, she thinks her soccer career is over. That’s ok though because she won’t have time for it anyway now that she’s made the gymnastics te

Summer is Here!

Even though yesterday was technically the last day of school, our girls last day was Wednesday.  Lilli was sick Monday, skipped field day Tuesday, and only went for the 2 hour awards ceremony Wednesday  so that we could leave for Baton Rouge. So her last day of work was really last Thursday (she went to Medieval Times Friday). She finished up the year strong! 3.9 GPA, National Honor Society, Talented Art and Theatre, Art club, 4-H, student council… we are very proud of her work! And Katie did great too! We may not have a bunch of awards but she has hit all of the Louisiana standards for even 4th grade in math and reading so she is well ahead of public school. We are very proud of all of her too!  Today was the first day of no morning alarms and getting to do what we wanted, and everyone did just that. Kelli and I both love Downton Abbey so we went to see it today for opening day And the girls spent the day swimming at the lake with Yaya. Kelli and I had not gotten to catch up in foreve

Kathy Craig Scholarship

After my Mom passed away, we ran the Race for the Cure each year and fundraised in her name. It’s definitely an important charity, but it was mainly for us. She didn’t have breast cancer and it wasn’t anything the family had done together before she died. We chose it because it was set up for us and didn’t take much leg work on our part, and my Dad’s Mom and sister both survived breast cancer, so it did have some meaning. But as the years went on, less and less people came and we raised less and less money, but we still wanted to do something. That’s when my Dad thought of a scholarship in her name. It was definitely part of God’s plan because it just so happened that the current director of magnet programs was one of Janet’s clients and she was able to get the ball rolling. She did 99% of the work on this, and as my Dad said this morning, if it wasn’t for her, we’d still be talking about how we would really like to do something like this. But right as we were starting to get it all fi

Winding Down

It’s so hard to believe that tomorrow is the last full day of school for the year! I’m sure they won’t even do too much but it’s the last day of a full 7:20-2:40 day until August. Tuesday is Lillian’s field day and I’m letting her skip because it’s just an hour of games and then they can check out. Wednesday is her awards ceremony at 9AM and then they can check out again, and Thursday is the official last day but she’ll be skipping it. And then that’s it, she’s done with Benton Intermediate and on to the full middle school next year. They had their end of the year field trip to Medieval Times on Friday and Matt had her at school at 6:15 to leave. She had a great time with her friends and it was the first time she’s ever left town without one of us. I was there to pick her and 2 of her friends up when they got in at 5:00, and we went to Nicky’s and had a sleepover  We all got up and watched Katie play in her soccer game that morning, and then Katie went to Landry‘s while I took the thre

Grow a Butterfly

Image
Jen and family got Kathleen one of those “grow a butterfly” kits for her birthday. We’ve had them before, but it’s been several years and she barely remembered. Jen accidentally sent the stuff to her house instead of here, so she ended up going to the Easter service in Baton Rouge with a cup of caterpillars in her purse to give them to us. 😂 I documented it all with pictures so here goes: They were caterpillars 🐛 for a little over a week and grew so fast! I swear you could have sat there and seen it happen. Between day 9 and 11 they all formed into chrysalises and we moved them to the net enclosure. It took about 9 days for the first butterflies 🦋 and by Saturday, day 20, they were all out so it was time to release. It doesn’t matter how many times we do this, it’s always very cool and amazing to think what miracles are on this Earth that God created.  Katie’s writing one day⬆️ It came with a 2nd voucher so we will definitely be doing this again after summer. It will probably be tha

Happy Mother’s Day!

Image
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms but especially the ones who are like Moms to me. I have some of the best!  I always miss my Mom on Mother’s Day but I’m fortunate to have a stepmom, mother in law, and grandmother that love me very much. But today I am most thankful for my two that made me a Mom.  Part of me wishes we could have been in Baton Rouge to celebrate with the family because it was also Ryan’s birthday yesterday and Jen’s today But we had a great day too. I woke up to some sweet cards from Matt and the girls and I had to take some pics to save them. All I wanted was a family day and gave them a choice between going to a movie together or going to a Tech softball game and it was a unanimous choice to go to the game. I thought Lillian would enjoy watching a college game now that she’s getting in to the sport and it was a lot of fun.  I tried getting tickets to a baseball game but they are sold out for the whole season. It all worked out to watched the girls though because w

Field Day Fun

The last few days have been very busy for Kathleen. It started yesterday with the homeschool Field Day at the YMCA. We met her new friend, Ella, there and they had the best time.  They had the long jump, egg toss, sack race relay, sponge bucket relay, 40 yard dash and tug of war. She won 3rd place in the long jump out of 8 and 9 year old girls and her relay team won the sponge race. There were about 30- 3rd graders, so a pretty good turnout.  We came home and had a little rest before Heather picked her and Landry up for a sleepover at Britney’s house last night.  They played on a bounce house and Heather made a cardboard house from appliance boxes, and then they all slept on the pullout couch which is HUGE for KJ because she’s pretty picky about sharing a bed with anyone but Mama 😉 Lillian enjoyed being an “only child” for a night so we took her out to eat and came home and watched a movie together I got to Heather’s about 9:00 this morning to pick the girls up for their soccer game b
